Arts and Attractions
Spearfish is home to many cultural events ranging from amateur art shows and festival, to community theater, to historical museums and the annual "Institute of the Arts" a month long celebration of the arts sponsored by Black Hills State University. Few cities our size can offer the cultural diversity and sophistication Spearfish enjoys.
Spearfish, famous for it's outdoor theatrical production the "Black Hills Passion Play," is widely recognized as a major tourism destination in South Dakota. Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Devil's Tower, Mount Rushmore and Jewel Cave National Park are all within a two-hour drive.
Black Hills Passion Play...
The Passion Play is the most renowned outdoor theatrical production in the Midwest. The Play portrays the last seven days of the life of Jesus Christ. Spearfish has hosted the play for over 60 years in its amphitheater set against the Black Hills. The cast numbers 250 with acting professionals in all speaking roles and locals filling non-
speaking parts.
Mt. Rushmore National Park...
Located just 45 minutes from Spearfish, is Mt. Rushmore -- our nations "shrine to democracy." Set in the majestic pine covered Black Hills National Forest, this world famous mountain carving stands over 500 feet depicting the faces of : Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln.
Matthew's Opera House...
The historic Matthew's Theater is a year round Performing Art Center featuring musicals, dramas and comedies. Some of the productions include Rodgers and Hammerstien Musical Revue; There Goes the Bride; Nutcracker; I Ought to be In Pictures; and On Golden Pond.
Spearfish Canyon...
More ancient than the Grand Canyon, Spearfish Canyon is a 19-mile scenic byway winding through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Black Hills. Cherished by those who visit it, Spearfish Canyon was made famous for its role it played in the filming of "Dances with Wolves."
High Plains Heritage Museum...
The High Plains Heritage Museum is a five state regional museum founded to honor the old west pioneers and the native American heritage. The museum features the best in western art, artifacts and memorabilia.
Festival in the Park...
Grown to be one of the largest art & cultural festivals in the upper Midwest, the Festival in the Park is a shoppers dream. Ethnic blends of food, music and art form over 230 venders are on display the third weekend of every July for local and tourist alike to enjoy.
Badlands National Park...
Recognized as a geological and paleontological treasure chest, the Badlands is one of the richest fossil beds known. The parries grasses, wildlife and wildflowers provide a view against the dramatic peaks that cannot be experienced anywhere else.
