Black Hills State University
Spearfish is home to Black Hills State University, a four-year institution providing superior academic programs. Founded in 1883, BHSU is the third largest university in South Dakota and the only comprehensive university west river. The University offers 66 bachelor’s, six associate and nine master’s degrees through the College of Business & Natural Science, College of Liberal Arts and the College of Education and Behavioral Science. Its School of Business is AACSB accredited and BHSU leads the way in exercise science, business, natural sciences and education. In addition, BHSU has more than 300 students enrolled in its high school Dual Credit Program. The program offers students the opportunity to earn high school and college credits, simultaneously. BHSU faculty and staff are engaged in numerous research projects and the University has an Underground Campus, a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead. BHSU competes in NCAA Division II, offering 14 athletic teams and a champion rodeo team.
