New Climbing Gym Opening in Spearfish

By Jim Holland, Rapid City Journal

SPEARFISH | Building on the reputation of the Black Hills area as a rock climber’s paradise, Spearfish will host the inaugural Black Hills Climbing Festival in July, and will soo

n be home to an indoor climbing gym.

The Climbing Festival is set for July 13-14 and the new climbing gym is scheduled to open May 1 at 1930 North Ave. Both the festival and the gym are being brought to Spearfish by High Mountain Outfitters, which caters to rock climbers, as well as hikers, campers, paddlers and all outdoor enthusiasts.

Spearfish is a natural base camp for rock climbing enthusiasts with four major climbing destinations in and around the Black Hills, including Spearfish Canyon, The Needles in Custer State Park, spires behind Mount Rushmore National Memorial, known as the Needles of Rushmore, and Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower.

High Mountain Outfitters is opening a new store in Custer later this month, joining existing locations in Spearfish and Hot Springs.

Owner Justin Stephens said the new climbing gym will be the first full-service indoor climbing facility in western South Dakota.

Recruiting Outdoor Product Manufacturing Companies

Recognizing the attraction of Spearfish’s strong economic advantages -as well our outdoor recreation/active lifestyle appeal- SEDC is making a strategic effort to recruit ad

SEDC has placed a half-page advertisement in the Spring issue of The Drake magazine.

ditional outdoor product manufacturing companies to our community. As part of these efforts, we have placed a half-page advertisement in the Spring issue of The Drake magazine. Founded in 1998, The Drake has become one of the premier fly fishing magazines and is sold in nearly 2,000 stores nationwide including 331 fly shops, 560 Barnes & Noble stores and hundreds of independent retailers. In addition to print, the publication is also available digitally. We will be placing similar advertisements in other outdoor lifestyle magazines in the future.

In addition to strategic ad placements, SEDC will also be attending the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market Show in Denver this July. This is the premier outdoor sports show in the nation with over 600 exhibitors from a variety of industries including backpacking, camping, hiking, climbing, skiing, mountain biking and fly fishing. The show will provide SEDC a unique opportunity to network directly with key decision makers and influencers from the outdoor product manufacturing market. This is extremely timely as Livability.com recently listed Spearfish as one of “The Best Home Base Cities for Adventure Enthusiasts.”

The SEDC Board and staff highly value the feed   back and ideas we receive from the SEDC membership. Please let us know if you have any personal or professional contacts in the outdoor products industry that you believe we should contact, or suggestions on this overall marketing initiative.
